June is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness and promoting dialogue about the unique mental health challenges faced by men. At Goodman JFS, we are committed to advocating for the support and care that men need and deserve.

Understanding the Challenges

Men’s mental health is marked by significant challenges. According to Mental Health America (MHA, 2023), over 6 million men experience depression annually, and over 3 million meet the criteria for an anxiety disorder each year. Alarmingly, half of these men do not seek therapeutic services. Furthermore, 10% of individuals with an eating disorder are men, and men exhibit higher rates of substance abuse (SAMHSA, 2020).

Societal stereotypes suggesting that men should be “strong” and “invulnerable” create undue pressure to suppress emotions. The expectation to be tough, self-reliant, independent, and stoic often results in a reluctance to express emotions openly or seek help. Consequently, many men are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, hindering their ability to receive the care they need, which negatively impacts their lives, families, and society.

Breaking the Stigma

Addressing these statistics requires open dialogue, compassionate conversations, and de-stigmatization efforts. Men need improved access to tailored mental health resources that cater specifically to their experiences. At The Jeff Masarek Behavioral Health Center of Goodman JFS, we provide a private practice setting that prioritizes confidentiality and personalized care, ensuring that every client feels valued and understood.
